Established a few years after Wilder's death, the FOAW, a 501©(3) nonprofit, strives to bring greater awareness of the musical gifts of this unclassifiable American composer. The organization's annual newsletter reports noteworthy performances and new recordings, and each year presents a New York City concert of Wilder's chamber music, art songs, and popular songs.
It is the intention of the followers of the music of Alec Wilder (1907-1980) to bring enhanced awareness and to preserve the life's work of this unique and fascinating American composer. Wilder was often misunderstood and ignored. Some considered him a maverick, as his music did not easily fit into any "designated" category. Yet, he is truly an American original and deserves far wider recognition. Wilder's self-professed lack of confidence and resistance to notoriety and acclaim were all lifelong struggles, as he chose to live life his way, on his terms, and to compose primarily for friends and others he felt might understand his craft.
