For more than thirty years as an avid "mover" in the brass world community, Robert Levy has performed with or recorded with the faculty brass quintets at Ithaca College, the University of Iowa, and Lawrence University. Multiple recording projects of several groundbreaking works featuring premieres of new compositions by Alec Wilder were recorded by the Tidewater Brass Quintet in the 1970s. Among them were works by Eric Ewazen, Brian Fennelly, and Wilder. Numerous stops followed through the years, with different brass quintet personnel, including at Oberlin's Summer Music Institute and many other summer music festivals.
In 1998, at the suggestion of Gunther Schuller,, he recorded the newly published Alec Wilder "Jazz Suite for Brass Quintet" with Chris Gekker, trumpet; David Jolley, horn; David Taylor, trombone; and Sam Pilafian, tuba; for an all Wilder wind/brass Cd recording, (Albany Records).
