Robert Levy's interest in composition evolved from his performance activity and close association with many composers. His works, many written for friends and students, have been premiered and performed by several of this country's leading brass virtuosi, trumpeter Chris Gekker (for the International Trumpet Guild's 1990 convention), tuba soloist Sam Pilafian, formerly of the Empire Brass, and bass trombonist David Taylor. The "Songs from a Lover's Eye," with poetry by Michael Glaser, a former colleague in Maryland, were written at the request of outstanding tenor Frank Hoffmeister. They were premiered at the University of Wisconsin-Oahkosh and performed over Wisconsin Public Radio by Hoffmeister, tenor; James Grine, flute; and David Calley, cello. Nichols Music.- now Ensemble Music, published two early works
Other works received performances by saxophonist Donald Sinta, marimbist Gordon Stout, the Lawrence Cello Ensemble, cellist Matt Turner, and the Either Orchestra. In l991, he received a "new work" award from the Wisconsin Arts Board and was named a 1994 Artist-in-residence by that same organization. Three years later, he was also an artist "fellow" in composition at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
Levy's more than seventy works, published by Alliance Publications/ National Publications (Fred Bock Publishing Group), Ensemble Music, and Triplo Press, remain available. Recent works include "Encounters KLW" (for solo trombone and wind ensemble), "Reflections" (for clarinet and trumpet), "Clemente" (for narrator, chorus, and strings); "Dance With Hurricanes" (for soprano and chamber ensemble) "Hymn Song for the Earth," (for orchestra), and five works for concert band: "Abide With Me," "Kaleidoscope," "Tapestry," "And Stars Remain," and "Winter Remembrance."
With Levy's association with American composers, it has been gratifying to see several compositions becoming part of the brass player's repertoire, with music by Allan Blank, William Mayer, John Huggler, John Harmon, Walter Hartley, and Alec Wilder appearing regularly on recitals throughout the country.
